Wise Words With: Skull Juice
Where did the name come from? Do you ever get booked into death metal clubs because of it?
It’s a bit of a boring story really…I’m afraid we just picked the words out of a hat! We’d been DJing together for a while and couldn’t think of anything…so we wrote down lots of random words and spent like 2 hours going through variations, and ended up thinking they were all crap. The next day we had to have a name for a flyer so just chose the combination we both didn’t completely hate. It’s grown on us since though…and yes, especially as people think we’re a death metal band!
What/who inspired you to take to the decks?
2manydjs and Erol pretty much. Listening to mixes by Optimo. 21st Century Bodyrockers, Trash, Bugged Out! and Return to New York, going to those clubs and wanting to do that, all the time, for ever. Some of the old Hollertronix mixes were great, ‘Never Scared’ is a classic…and John Peel was pretty inspirational too.
You seem to like a bit of everything good from dubstep to disco and techno. How do you describe your style? What genre’s do you avoid?
Its healthy to enjoy all kinds of music isn’t it really, theres always something good in every genre…though we tend to avoid Trance in all forms. Goa Trance, Psy Trance, Hard Trance, Acid Trance, Underground Trance, Trance Trance…and Polka
When can we expect to hear some original Skull Juice material?
Soon…though it’s still early days for us…we’ve been doing edits for ages, and have recently got started on remixes…of course we make our own stuff too, but whether its fit to be heard by anyone else yet is another matter! We shall see…

We decided to limit ourselves to acts who are still actively playing these days…otherwise it’d be stuff like Talking Heads or Frank Zappa…but yeah its still pretty ridiculous, we’ve still left out loads of people too, like Alter Ego or Stacey Pullen or Altern 8 or Lindstrom or Smith n Hack…there’s just too much good stuff out there…
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
Blimey, ‘career’? Sounds so serious. I guess when we played Trash and Bugged Out! the first times. We were really nervous. It was just weird after going to these nights for so long and then suddenly playing! Dream come true really. Also Fabric. Touring with Mystery Jets was one of the funnest weeks ever. We love those guys. Some of the gigs around Europe have been incredible, like G.O.A. in Madrid where they set off this water cannon mounted in the roof during every break down while the sun was setting, and HotHotHot in Norway. Bergen is a beautiful city. The Nasti parties were great too, amazing people. And last summer when we toured Australia, that was pretty ridiculous. We couldn’t believe it was happening until we actually arrived there!
Which dj’s and producers are buzzin’ you up right now?
Hercules & Love Affair. Anyone on Dissident. Worthy, Lee Mortimer, Oliver $. Clouded Vision, Brodinski, Rustie. Midnight Mike’s new ‘Mickey Moonlight’ productions are great. Oh yeah and bands…there are a few that we’re loving. Late Of The Pier pretty much rule. Sam’s LA Priest stuff is incredible as well. New M83 stuff and the new Mystery Jets album are pretty exciting too of course
Do you like eggs, Benedict?
Not really, just soft boiled with soldiers, and fried egg yokes, they’re good. Not the whites though, I don’t trust whitey.
What vintage classics are you trying to work into your sets at the moment? Do you buy many old records?
Lots and lots and lots. We buy far too many records…when you’re buying records instead of food or paying your rent you know you have a problem. We play quite a few old records in our sets as well. It seems that these days everyone is scrambling for the latest promo of this or that and won’t play anything out that’s over a week old! If a record is good, then there’s nothing wrong with digging it out again. As for specific classics we’re playing? “This Is Penis” by Long Fellow is pretty big, arf arf.
When are you going to post on your blog again? It’s been since December?!
When Alex does his next podcast mix, Ben’ll do his next blog post, it’s a pact that means nothing will ever happen haha…but seriously, watch this space. We have some surprises in store.
