A Quick Chat With Paul Chambers

Paul Chambers

Do you actually play the Keytar as the album art suggests? I own that machine, and I use it a lot. But I don’t play it like that, I’m more of a knob twister than a Keytar acrobat. Why do you think they fell out of favour? It’s a travesty. A lot of cool things fell out of favour. But as we can see now, usually they come back at some point in time being all hip and cool again. How do you make your sound so face melting? If I told you I would have to kill you. All I can say it involves analog circuits and a lot of patience. What’s your studio like? My studio is like a big box of Legos. Whenever I start a new project, I usually change it around completely. Not so much because it would be better, but I enjoy messing around in it and after a day of soldering new cables or building a new table for a synth I get into the feel of the whole thing. Then I have this traveling setup which I really love. Basically it’s a laptop, one synth I can carry, a MIDI keyboard and my headphones. My favourite destination for writing music this way is Barcelona, and it works really well for me. Do you agree with the statement No Techno!? No. Do you like Acid? I like the sound of the TB-303, that’s a fact. In my opinion there is no other synth that has such a recognizable sound and that alone makes it pretty unique. But that’s not the answer to the question. I like Acid in its purest form when I listen to records, or when it’s done well as a well balanced ingredient to a track. To me it always feels like a wink to the past, and if it’s done well it can really rip up the dance floor. So yes, I like Acid when it’s done well. Some favourite records? Way too many to narrow down to a few. But lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Luke Vibert, Legowelt, Flying Lotus, Jim Hall and Connan Mockasin. What next? I’m about to release a track I did with Shinichi Osawa. It’s out already in Japan but I think it will come to the rest of the world soon. I’m also working on a guest mix for the online Radio Soulwax which will be a lot of fun, and I’m also working on some remixes. Out now on Phantasy Sound:
