Wise Words With: Matt Walsh

So how did you get involved with Turbo?

About a year ago I played a warm up set for Tiga at a Bugged Out party at T bar, Tiga arrived and saw the end of my set and was surprised to see somebody that looked like a “nu raver” playing disco and techno records. We got on straight away after comparing styles and talking about football and from then on he introduced me to his brother Thomas. Thanks to the internet I was able to get to know the Canadian Label boss and supplied two podcasts for the “Sid Loves Turbo” bi-weekly show. Choices from these seemed to fuel the relationship and late night Ichat conversations about the current music scene (and the good old days) led to an internet match made in heaven. Myself and Thomas then did a gig “exchange” in each other’s countries where I had the pleasure of playing a back to back “acid only” party in a cave in Montreal. A month later Thomas trialled the sights and appetisers of Trailer Trash, Nottingham, Manchester and Wet Yourself all in one weekend! Just before Christmas I was asked to join the label on it’s tour of North America where I am currently in bed enjoying the jetlag right now!

Did it have anything to do with the fact you look a bit like Tiga?!

Of course not! Those people that were filming me ACTUALLY thought I was an amazing warm up DJ with great style and technique at T Bar. The next day I searched Youtube for videos of the night before and found videos of me under “Tiga at T Bar”!

What has the reaction been like to the North American tour been like?

I arrived back yesterday from a two week tour of North America and Canada, there may even be a video link available by the time I’ve answered these questions, if not sit tight! We started in Boston and visited Halifax, Toronto, Quebec, Chicago, New York and Montreal. All the dates included D.I.M., Thomas and myself and Toronto/Quebec with Tiga also. Reactions were great, the scene is very different to London but people still know how to have a good time. There are plenty of stories to tell but you know what they say about what happens on tour…Wait for the video!

What is Thomas Von Party like and has he been getting his puppets out?

Thomas is probably the hardest working guy I have met. From the second he wakes up he is typing away before he even has the power of speech. The puppets for those of you that have seen the “Hot in Herre” video have unfortunately been put in the loft and Von Party’s tiny nimble digits are now used for writing 100 plus emails a day in response to the many new acts out there in the blogosphere!!

What are you hoping to achieve with Clouded Vision? Is it a duo?

Clouded Vision was formed about a year ago with an old friend and great producer, Steve Cook. We share the same background of Acid House and Rave, with a bit of Indie on my part and a bit of Drum & Bass on his. We decided to sit down and reminisce about the acid days and came up with a track, initially titled “Satur8”. I started to play it out in amongst sets at Bugged Out, Durrr and Wax:On and it was going down pretty well. Tiga then played it on a pod cast and asked us to remix “Shaded” by Cari Lekebusch. This came out on Turbo alongside remixes from Comphphonic & Kolombo and Jesper Dahlback. Since then we have remixed Lennie de Ice’s Rave Anthem “We R IE” for a re-release on the UK label People in the Sky and last week finished a summertime acid mix of Moby’s “I Like To Move in Here”. For a bit of fun we also did a quick edit of one of my all time favourites “Rocks” by Primal Scream. This can be found over on www.fluokids.blogspot.com. You can listen to our stuff on myspace.com/cloudedvisionmusic. We are working on an EP for Turbo so keep a look out!

Are you going to release music under your own name?

I’d like to in a few months time, some re edits and stuff after the summer I hope.

You are a regular at Durrr and Bugged Out too, how did you get involved in those nights?

I was an original Trash regular from way back and used to travel up from Essex and still go back in to work on the Tuesday. I met a lot of people there, including Erol and Shahin! I moved to London about 2 and a half years ago and went to Trash every week. Durrr took over and I was asked to play and am now a resident there. The same goes for Bugged Out! It had been my favourite club night when it was monthly Fridays at Fabric alongside The Boutique when I started going about 9 years ago. I got talking to a lot of the Djs and Johnno and Charlotte in the early days and did a mix for The Bugged Out Competition 2 Years ago. I was then asked to warm up the lounge in January 07 and have been a regular since…

We hear you are a bit sporty? Could you offer tennis lessons to Erol’s forum with a discount?

Haha yes ,surprisingly enough, you can be a sports jock and dress like a Shoreditch Twat at the same time! I actually have a degree in Sports Science and have been working with kids for 12 years, ahhhh. For a free one-to-one Tennis lesson please print this question off and bring along to your local leisure centre.

What’s buzzing you up right now?

Tunes? Theres a lot of great stuff out there and there seems to be an escape from the banger/fly swatting dance manoeuvre records. Right now I think Klang Electronik are doing a great job, their last three releases have been class and seem to work on a lot of floors. On the other end of the scale Dissident are the label that are making me want to buy vinyl again and the disco sound seems to be creeping into a lot of peoples boxes of late. The Padded Cell album especially is a great record.

Who are your favourite all-time artists and dj’s?

I think my roots from Clacton Pier have a lot answer for. I was bearly old enough to get in to Oscars in its hay day but Altern 8 and The Prodigy were the first people I listened to at school. I think I discovered Djing during my indie Britpop days thanks to Andrew Weatherall, David Holmes and Primal Scream where I realised that there could be a lot more to music than just guys with floppy hair and guitars. From a production point of view, AFX, DMX Krew, The Chemical Brothers, and most of the early Acid House era. Right now If I were to go out I think a line up of Dixon, Ivan Smagghe, Carl Craig, Ed DMX, Tiga, Marco Corola and Andre Gallutzi I could settle for!

What’s your hair looking like at the moment? Does the style have a name?

I’m the first to admit I can be a victim of fashion and I get bored very quickly. For those of you up north, I recently decided the “friar look” was over and “rockabilly” was the logical next step. As I was coming up the stairs at the Soulwax gig last month, I heard a voice down the corridor say “Can you let the bloke who looks like Morrissey through please”. Stop me Erol, I haven’t heard that one before!
