My goal is to watch as much as possible nominated films before the ceremony as i do every year, although 2011 was the worst year in film industry in a very long time.
2012 is gonna be a good year though, many good titles are coming up in this year.
uhm......you might wanna fact check this one.....I thought this was a bit fishy when I saw the Artist wasn't mentioned.
I want Brad to take it home for Tree of Life, mainly so he can finally have one, and yeah, cause he's brilliant and beeyootifoool. But Gary Oldman just deserves it more, and I'm sure Pitt would agree. I'd like to see Fassbinder and Gosling get some acknowledgment though, they've both had spectacular years, especially Fassbinder, who's gone from that guy in Inglorious to one of the best actors of his generation overnight. Would like to see Craig get nominated too, but the Academy loves Clooney, and as good as he was in Dragon Tattoo, it's just another role that he plays if you get what I mean.
Best Picture: The Artist, and maybe Tree Of Life, but I feel like it's kind of slipped from everyone's mind. War Horse has got a chance, which I haven't seen, but seems a bit corny to win. Then again, it's got Benedict Cumberbatch, so I'm probably going to get around to it. BTW, everyone needs to see the first episode of Sherlock season two, it's is absolutely amazing.
Best Actress: Rooney Mara, but that's a fanboy pick, it's probably going to Streep. Or Williams, if there's any justice in the world
I wonder what I was on when I wrote this as it's horrendously written.

do not go and see a dangerous method. under any circumstances. genuinely awful film. 110 odd minutes of my life I WILL NEVER GET BACK.

Edit: Spelt the directors name as if he were a cheap, widely available French lager.

really like the topic of the movie, as well as the cast and director. was really looking forward to watching this, but I was very disappointed. of all the paths Cronenberg could've taken with such an extensive topic he took the lowest one, imo. he gratuitously attacks Freud throughout the whole picture for, absolutely, no apparent reason. that and Keira Knightley's over-acting.. def not her best work. felt really underwhelmed after watching it, given my expectations. nevertheless, it's an entertaining movie, even though it only scratches the surface of what it could've accomplished. I'd see it again if it was on tv.

On the subject of Movies you should definitely avoid...
Coriolanus. Watched the trailer and thought it looked like a generally good, modern thriller adapted from a Shakespeare piece. How wrong! ALL the dialogue is in Shakespearean English (which meant I literally had no idea what was going on the entire time), and despite an apparently strong cast, the acting is laughable. It's boring and a complete waste of cinema money. People were leaving the cinema during it, I wish I'd joined them. I'd rather re-watch Sharktopus.

Interesting, and disappointing. As you say, one to watch on TV perhaps.

I thought it would be 'based on' not a remake or whatever. the trailer gave no hint of Shakespearean lingo.

doesn't the trailer have lines from the play?
anyway this week i saw margaret, a film about anna paquin causing a bus crash and dealing with the emotional fallout. i don't like paquin and she plays a deplorable self-centred teen so i didn't really take to it at all. there were also these really arbitrary swooping shots of new york that were almost reminscent of the room at times.
last night i saw a russian film called target which was about these rich folk seeking eternal life from radiation at a disused nuclear bunker. it's quite rambly and a little bit moralistic but it was beautifully shot (for the most part) and there was some gorgeous orchestral saxophone music in it. the audience were ready to leave before it had even finished (it was 150 minutes and felt it) but i thought it was a worthwhile slog.

Hugo - i didn't like it at all. i couldn't even finish it. i shouldn't watch it. the last thing i like is kids films. i get it as a kids film but i can not imagine any kid watching this. it's got a huge budget and was visually good but lacks in everything else. one hell of a boring film.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - this is another film with a kid in the leading role but not a kids film. i didn't like this either but unlike Hugo this was at least watchable. the boy played very well although he was a bit irritating. emotional film but not touching enough and not something that will resonate with you afterwards.
The Descendants - decent film but nothing special actually. in any case it's worth seeing, non-intrusive and relaxing film. perfect to watch before to go to bed, or at least that was how i felt it. that was maybe really the best role of Clooney in his entire career but oscar nomination is a bit too much imo. Shailene Woodley was great! very beatiful and talented young actress with bright future i reckon.
J. Edgar - huge fan of Clint Eastwood especially as a director, all of his films are great but i just don't like the subject of this film.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - didn't impress me much, average film imo. too overhyped. and too long, it could be shortened to 2 hours length. maybe i should watch the original instead.
High Tension - awesome french slasher from 2003 that i had missed to watch. directed by the genius young horror director Alexandre Aja, perfectly shot bloody, suspense horror-thriller with twisted end. and tension, tension, tension... from beginning to end. i couldn't want more.

High Tension was decent but the ending was a stinker. it was too grounded the whole way through to cop out with this psychosis bullsh*t.
And who did the other "normal" girl think was chasing them in reality?
Kind of like the end of Kill List where the film was interesting up to the point where the loony cult went for naked midnight stroll. Although the ending of Kill List was about 10 times worse.

Yeah, at first i was disappointed by that twist in High Tension but later i realized that otherwise it would be just a regular horror film which i would also highly appreciate but the twisted end takes it to a higher level imo.
I was considering to watch Kill List but the trailer discouraged me.

it's about a man in 1930s italy who's been turned into a pig, who deserts the army cause he's not a fascist, works as a bounty hunter against air pirates... obviously it's fúcking awesome.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was a neat film. the cinematography was very cold... much to my liking. as for the story - it was fairly slow all throughout the film but I still enjoyed it

Quite glad I'm not the only person to feel this. I was beginning to think it'd be another thing I'd just have to smile and agree with people about, like dogs and christmas.
What I've watched recently.
The Muppets, see above comment from Roland.
Animal Kingdom, which I thought was good, but not to the levels it has been hyped by some websites and mates who have seen it.
Jon Carter of Mars, which was enjoyable enough no-brainer fluf.
Project-X, which just made me want to go out and get mashed after the first twenty minutes. It felt rote and formulaic, even when the chaos begun to spiral.

Well Prometheus is set 30 years before the first Alien, but i'd recommend anyone who hasnt seen them to watch Alien, Aliens and even Alien 3. Great movies with great directors (Scott, Cameron and Fincher) but avoid the 4th and both AVP's like a plague ;)
Here's the very cool trailer for Ridley Scotts "Alien", you can see how similar he's keepin Prometheus to it...

Well you should see them in general, but they will definitely improve the experience.
