I'm considering getting a t-shirt made up that says 'This DJ does/ does not play Dubstep' with a little velcro cross like this one

RE: No Breasts No Requests - UCUW - 2011-05-04 17:00:09

Thats why i dont like playing at student parties. You get the most sickening requests..

RE: No Breasts No Requests - Patrick122 - 2011-05-04 17:07:44

If you look closely at 'acid hose' the clever buggers have put a 'u' inside the 'o'.

You got par.

Edit: I kind of hate DJ culture.

RE: No Breasts No Requests - TempestDisco - 2011-05-04 18:11:47

Small time DJs with a big ego genuinely grind my gears. 'NOT PLAYING REQUESTS, I HAVE A SUPERIOR KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC' and playing Johannes Heil tunes to an empty dancefloor.

In a dance music club where people go for dance music, by all means, stick to your guns and play what you like. But general DJs in generic bars with names like DJ Stevemax and DJ Heltaskelta, NO ONE is there to just see you, play what people want to hear.

I find DJ egos cringe-worthy but...I don't think we've ever played a request (unless someone's requested a track that we were going to play anyway), and I do feel for the DJs on this forum who play regularly and get hassled for this every time they play.

Personally for me the big ego DJ thing comes not with the tune selection, but the general attitude. I've met several 'name' DJs who really do think they're Monsieur Hot Shit just because they're mixing a few tunes together. On the other hand, I've met some really nice residents and warm ups who just love the music and still get to play what they want without being a massive wanker about it.

No, we play with people from other labels all the time.

I see what you are getting at, but at the same time fundamentally disagree. When a venue hires me, it is at least partially because I act as a taste filter for the venue; I listen to all the crap and filter it out so the venue doesn't have to. Of course, at some gigs that means having to get used to saying the word "No" to people, but thats just the way it is.

I will happily play some pop, and some R&B. But I'd rather kick myself repeatedly in the balls than put that new LMFAO on.

I wouldn't say that you were a 'small time' DJ though.
I've heard of you for a start ;)

RE: No Breasts No Requests - tim101 - 2011-05-04 21:46:48

i wouldnt take a request, and i wouldnt request a tune cause i believe a dj should create his own world with the music he has, the audience should obey if he is any good, if he is crap then the audience will request. but there is a silent dignity to it all, the banners are kinda lame.

I'm getting somewhere slowly, but only really over the last 12 months in the dance music scene - I've been DJing in all sorts of venues for over 10 years, and if I'd just taken the attitude "if they ask for it I'll play it" I'd have probably given up on music a long time ago.

I totally accept that requests go with the territory, and I love that moment when someone requests something and you already have it cue'd up, or even better when a lightbulb appears above your head and you are like "Nice one! Thats a great idea!". But when I'm playing 90s hip hop and someone comes over and says (and this happened over the weekend!) "Have you got any Britney? Ok, what about Take That? No? Ok...... Hmmm. Well, you MUST have some JLS?", I reserve the right to say no!

RE: No Breasts No Requests - drachir - 2011-05-04 21:54:08

The only time I've ever played was at a party for an hour because my friend who was meant to be DJing was lying on the kitchen floor.

I was playing techno, there was a small room full of people dancing, and some dick came up and started hounding me for dubstep. To try and please him whilst not pissing everyone else off I played Addison Groove, but that just made things worse. He kept asking for more, wobbly dubstep, even asking if he could play it on YouTube.

I walked off in the end and left the party in silence, and that was the end of my career as a superstar DJ.

Edit: I'd like to add a very pretty girl also asked me for Man With The Red Face, and I obliged. A not so pretty girl asked for Prodigy and I told her I couldn't really fit it in and she thanked me and went back to her friends. It was just the guy with the rucksack that made me retire.

DJing at a wedding in November and will have to go with all kinds of nonsense in the CD wallet I reckon. I draw the line at JLS though, you have to have some standards.

RE: No Breasts No Requests - shortcircuit - 2011-05-04 22:19:15

Yeah a guy asked me for some dubstep, once when everyone was clearly having a good time listening to the techno and house I was playing. As if such a genre change would go down well. So arrogant really.
i.e. 'Please change the theme of the whole night because I don't like it even though everyone else is clearly having a good time'
