Recording Microsoft Sam saying "you are listening to ____" and popping it over the track a few times?

I meant something like a small attachment that identifies who bought the mp3, so if it gets spread everyone can see whose purchase leaked. don't ask me how to do it but once it gets done I hold the copyright to the idea.
I THINK this is already common with some promotional releases. I remember there was a scandal involving Ninja Tune and a german rap magazine:

It is a pretty common practice for the major's promos but I really can't see it catching on at the consumer level; How would the watermark be linked back to you in this case? Would you offer up your CC info again after already purchasing the record? I guess if it was just a beatport mp3 it could be linked back to your payment, but then you're looking at suing consumers and the backlash of that

Even after watermarking an mp3 like described, it's very easy to get around. Rerecording the mp3 in equal quality would give minimal quality reduction.

General rule still is, if you can hear it, you can copy it.

It's also not difficult to run but you will never be as fast as Usain Bolt.

You can delete that however (don't ask me how, a guy I know who's in the scene does it)

if you're only trying to get a 320 mp3 out of it you really don't need to spend that much. having said that, lets not turn this into another thread arguing music quality ect.

this, for instance, is a 320 rip

Nowadays, I wish that a lot of DJs at festivals could stop thinking, "OK, I gotta rock the people" and take a step back. It's easy to make everyone go crazy. Scooter can make people go crazy. That's not a tricky thing. It's harder to do something fresh.

on another note, are these leaks generally happening as the expense of a producer's carelessness (e.g. giving promos to blogger types etc), or is this stuff getting stolen?

Mostly the first one, it's also often careless people who are on the promo list who want to be nice to their buddies.

I'm pretty sure this release will be available for Digital Users, too. As I saw SCNTST had the Digital Promo in his Traktor playlist...

Just because it exists digitally doesn't mean it will be released digitally. These tracks probably haven't been pressed on vinyl yet, so naturally the BNR crew will be playing it out digitally for hype, good party times etc.

...and thanks to a generous person who is also on the promo list it will get leaked and we will still be able to obtain in some way. Good to know. ;)
