because it may offend and exclude soldiers and people who support the war.
This is basically what I've been told by University of Sunderland students union. What a joke! Anyway, if I don't get permission for the society after a meeting tomorrow then I'm going to be seriously pissed off. Just thought I'd let you know how much of a joke our society is becoming. |

wankydave Wrote:what use is a society in sunderland uni anyway?Well there's not much going on in Sunderland in relation to Stop the War compared to other places like Newcastle. So I'm hoping that through the society more people can get involved and go to demonstrations and use the university to get meetings with guest speakers. There's no reason why we shouldn't have a society there anyway, loads of universities do, plus the NUS officially supports it. Shame Sunderland uni isn't affiliated to NUS. |

Yeh I did get permission in the end, 20 mins before the freshers fayre started. Loads of people interested in getting involved too.
I'm not entirely sure what happened and why they tried to stop us in the 1st place, but it looks like someone from the student union didnt want any political activity on campus in case we went too far, and tried to stop it incase it becomes successful and triggers more activity on campus. The president of the SU didnt even seem to know what Stop the War actually was and hadn't even researched until after they tried to ban us. I don't think they expected me to put up a fight against them as it was initially just me trying to set up the society. But I think once they researched what StW was and after asking questions further up in the university they realised they couldnt do anything to stop me without making themselves look like twats, as they realised that I would take it further if needed. When we were setting up the stall at the fayre, a woman who works in the union and who was taking the minutes in the meeting, basically said that that the way the president talked to me in the meeting was disgusting and that I've basically been treat really bad. |
