....and because harmonic distortion and that can often make it sound much better than an mp3 or AAC....and because physically owning a record is much more satisfying than a file on a hard drive. You don't get many mp3 collectors, after all.

im an mp3 collector, but i also have some vinyl from when i used to collect old school hip hop when i had a belt drive turntable (back in theday) , and in terms of artwork i look at mp3 artwork a lot more then that what is presented on my old vinyl.

it terms of satisfaction, im indiffernet. lugging vinyl around london, would be extremely annoying, but with cds i can virtually bring my entire collection to the party in a satchel.

i think the combination of ease and effort, mobility and artwork retained makes mp3 collecting just as enjoyable. a modern equilvent so to speak.

and with i tunes now with over 18 million albums there is finally enough choice to explore throughly/...

As far as I know, unless all the critic elements of a production (mics, synths and mixing desks) operate on analog, your record won't sound better on wax.

Vinyl is not a magical improver of your sound, it just preserves the analog chain if there was one.

That said, there are plenty of reasons why listening to 12"s is a whole different experience.

As said in the thread-that-must-not-be-named, vinyl makes music sound warmer, not better.

I should perhaps have said "more pleasant", not better.
Nevertheless, vinyl (like tape) does sound very different to digital, and many people do prefer that colouring of the signal.

By the way, I don't buy vinyl myself. I just find it odd that people can think a lossy format could be a suitable alternative.

@Claude I disagree, basically because warmness is a feeling - something that is perceived subjectively hence it can not be measured.

Vinyl has a harmonic distortion ratio of ~2% apparently, which can be described as 'warm' I guess. Digital has not, as long as the sample rate is broad enough.

ps - just trying to contribute!

on this note - buying flat beat in a second-hand store doesn't send any money back to mr oizo, but buying the mp3s would, right? so there is that issue too. only in terms of second hand of course. this has, not exactly troubled me, but had me think for about 30 seconds before. that sounds very glib.

Aye, that's why I refuse to pay £34 for a second hand copy of Moodymann's 'Silent Introduction', knowing that Planet E will see none of that money. I reckon, though, that most people couldn't give two shits about that.

Exactly.

Yes this is true. The fundamental reason why money and music are bad in one another's company.

Edit: I buy vinyl.

Although I understand where you're coming from, that train of though pretty much applies to everything second hand...

well i'd feel a lot less conflicted buying a second-hand william faulkner book than i would buying a second-hand vinyl copy of golden traxe

Saw that the new Levon Vincent was released today after I'd left Glasgow, pretty gutted. Saw him DJ a couple of weeks ago and he ended on Man or Mistress, was so amazing.
