Anyone watch Louis Theroux in Philly?

Pretty much was the Wire but in real life. I heartily recommend an iPlayer session for anyone that missed it.

But what are forums for if not to rant?

I'm interested now as I, like AlexTheKid, think The Wire is better. And you've yet to watch season 4, the best season IMO.

OK I guess there's time for me to convert yet.

(some spoilers below!)

Just think there are certain subtleties in Sorpranos that you dont get in The Wire. I think the Wire can be predicatable sometimes, I didnt feel you got that with Sopranos. The way they built the suspense, you never knew who was gonna get whacked. The producers and writers really put you on the edge. Like with the deaths of Adriana and Ralphy, I was like Whoa shit, never saw that coming! I dont feel you get any knockout scenes like that in the Wire

But as I said theres still time :)

I do like how in the Wire though you get to see how both the organisations of the criminals and the police work, the intricacies and the politics. Sometimes you never know who the good guys are.

I saw an interview with Ed Burns and he was saying how they tried to create the Wire as a book, each episdode is supposed to unfold like a new chapter of a book. Have to say think they've got that spot on.

Imagine Sopranos done in the style of The Wire. I think it would be pretty awesome.

About to start season 4. Blockbuster fucked up and started sending me season 5 so ive had to save them all to disk....stick to lovefilm folks, its the shit

Yeah but the thing is thats half the point of the wires storytelling. As matey points out, it's like a book everything unfolds in a logical manner - sudden unexpected deaths aren't likely because you've seen everything thats lead up to the death so it makes perfect sense. I do kinda prefer that sort of storytelling, it seems more satisfying based on clever well thought out plotting rather than quick thrills from unexpected stuff. Although there are one or two unexpected ones - but i won't spoil.

BTW I haven't actually watched much of the sopranos so I'm somewhat basing this on your comments - I may have totally got the wrong end of the stick

I also feel the Wire gets the opportunity to tackle a lot of things; both crime and the law but also the problems working class/blue collar workers face, rehabilitation (both with people and cities), schooling systems and the media. Whilst it's very much about crime it's also about all sorts of organisations and issues within the way we live. What I saw of the Sopranos (again this may be over generalising) it was more focussed on the characters and the key theme of family.

And yeah, watch season 4 - it's probably the best one.

Cool, wouldn't disagree with any of your comments about the Wire there.

Perhaps I didnt explain it very well but I wasnt saying Sopranos did things for a quick thrill, quite the opposite in fact.

Me too, nearly half way through season one.I watched Underbelly last week and while it was ok there was no depth to it at all.I cant explain why i put off starting The Wire till now really,i just never thought it would stand next to the Sopranos but then again its not supposed to.

just finished watching the last episode, shiiiiiiiiiiiit, that was awesome since 2006 i was feeling a great void as sopranos had called it a day but having got the whole 5 seasons of the wire over christmas, its been a pleasant couple of months. Don't think it quite touches the sopranos but def no 2 and " The game is the game" don't matter if your a bunch of corner boys from B'more or fat middle aged blokes from NJ. why cant we have some quality uk tv like that?

Apparently it's going to be on bbc 2 from the very beginnning, starting in a couple of weeks.

Will probably watch it now, just hope i'm not disappointed, what with the universal adoration of this programme.

Mad Men is superb; I'm also partial to a bit of Damages.

We were just a band who made it very big, that's all - John Lennon

I am one of the best singer-songwriters this country has produced - Mick Hucknall
