Does anybody here have any advice /information about setting yourself up as a company with the aim of going freelance?

A did A-level Business Studies but don't remember much! :/

Along the lines of Limited Company vs. Sole Trader

Tax advice, costs and document requirement for start up etc.

I have one customer lined up already in Turin but I think its better (less tax) for me to set up in the UK and probably even move back there.

Any help greatly appreciated.

That's what I do, got a limited company VAT registered and all that carry on..

If your looking for an accountant/someone to help you set it up/do all the donkey work speak to somebody at Solo PLC (link will be on the internet somewhere).

Less than £5,500 a year earnings = no pay tax. So if you're just doing it on the side you don't *really* need to.

If you're going full time and are fairly serious you better register yourself as self-employed and all that jazz.

Or you *couldn't* ;)

But in this case you won't be signed on OR registered as employed so you would be 'off the system' altogether. More than 5 years of this (being a Uni student included) and I don't think you can qualify for a state pension. Whether or not they'll even be around in 20 years time is another story.

I'd say look into joining a trade union as they can give you loads of advice and help on what you need to do as a freelancer.

I'm looking into going freelance once I've finished uni so I got a student membership with BECTU.

I am currently training as an ACCA Accountant and work for a firm of Chartered Accountants.

If you want any advice feel free to email me some questions and I will do my best to answer them. If you end up needing services you may be better going local, but I can answer any questions you might have.
