I really want to start a mix with a track that's only 101bpm. It can be sped up by about 5% before it starts sounding odd. Is there anyway to mix well into a song of a greater speed? I know the easiest solution would be to build the mix 100bpm then 105bpm then 110bpm and so on but my collection seems to be lacking in good tunes in this area of speed (unless someone can recommend some?) Any tips appreciated....
Cheers. |

When in doubt.

I'm sure lots of people will have suggestions for tracks in that area. A simple way might be to mix in from a breakdown lacking a beat in the faster tune and just fade it across.

does it start sounding odd because of pitch shift? what are you using to make mix? if u can lock the pitch it should still sound ok...

plug your headphones into the mic input and introduce the next song verbally, Maybe include some irrelevant celebrity chat, or a travel update. Give a 'shout out' to John in his lorry on the M6.
With that kind of a mix, people won't even notice the difference in BPM. http://www.insidedisco.com next INSIDE party - Monday 25th May - Casiokids // Sunset Cinema Club // Bright Light Bright Light (Rod Thomas) |

Sometimes speeding up just beats doesn't sound too awful (e.g mix the very end of the track with the start of the next so there isn't much sound - then speed up both at the same time - not always super easy tho!). If you do it at a consistent rate (and not in the middle of the song) it sounds deliberate enough to work
Or make a loop of a good sound without beats (4 beats of something - e.g a vocal or sound) and speed that up, then drop the beats of the next track over the loop. TBH it varies massively tune to tune |

You could loop a few beats and gradually introduce an echo (or similar) effect until it starts to sound 'messy'. Fade out and just introduce the beat of the new track (or better still, a part of the new track that contains no beats like a vocal hook, breakdown etc)

You'd find a lot of Modeselektor's tunes are in quite low bpm if you need some tracks in that register. If you wanna hear how to dodge away from bpm changes and tone changes in a live mix, just listen to Vitalic's "V live".. It doesn't sound perfect like on a mix-cd, but it works when working the floor ;)
