I dont even think half way comes close to the truth.

The police should have:-

* Protected property. (When they did what can only be described as deliberate or really really bad planning by being nowhere near the sacrificial lamb, RBS, one of the few buildings that decided to leave nice glass windows on show considering their old boss and his pension would be one of the major gripes and targets)

* Protect the innocent. (Instead of treating everyone on the streets as full blown rioters BEFORE they actually got the hump. Yes every person has the potential to be a spazzer but treat people how you expect to be treat yourself. The police treat people very badly and expect them to bow down.

* Use legitimate crowd control techniques. (Do not herd people into smaller spaces denying people water, food, medicine and freedom of movement for hours and hours.)

Did I mention that I think they are fucking scum? If only I could pretend its the minority. But then when youre a uniformed copper, you leave your personality at the door and you become a number yourself. You are treated as a number and you return the favour down the chain.

Read this thread for a while and have to throw my two pennyworth in, especially now I have my account back.
Protesters in the UK always seem on the right track, but watered down compared to the French. I was stuck over there during the first petrol strikes and that was scary stuff, they brought their economy to a halt: lorries blocked every port, airport and even main roads out of France, no commerce happened and they all took to the streets actually proper rioting - I saw that first hand.
Obviously the oil distilleries were blocked like we did in the UK, but they didn't do those pathetic slowing down on the motorway that we seemed to do.
Ok in the end we won cheaper petrol, but for how long did that last?
The govenment I bet just sat on the arses, twiddling their thumbs with happy smiles on their faces, purely cos they know how apathetic and uncaring a country we've become and how pathetic our efforts are at protesting or even raising our concerns.

Myself I got disillusioned with the whole fact that so many people buy into the government's agenda that they can't see past it and make a uniformed idea of life themselves, the media feeds on this urge and we're becoming like America, it's sad that we no longer have any voices out there to heed that aren't out there for their own agendas too, its a dog eat dog mentality in all aspects of politics and unless we learn to change that, even on grassroots level, it never will and the government will keep using these divide and conquer tactics to keep the mass who they should be working for, not the other away around, at bay.
The police are just another scare tactic they use, "This is what you get when you fuck with the government", look what Maggie Thatcher did during the miners' strikes with her police force in the 80s.
The government is most scared of us, the silent majority, since they no longer rule for us, but are a law unto themselves, I wonder how MPs are taking the recession? Any of them volunteering to give up their expenses allowances to help contribute? Will any of them be unemployed? Doubtful.

This is a quote from Bill Hicks, who some of you may know:
“I'll show you politics in America. Here it is, right here: I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs. I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking. Hey wait a minute, there's one guy holding up both puppets! Shut up! Go back to bed America, your government is in control. Here's Love Connection, watch this and get fat and stupid. By the way, keep drinking beer, you fucking morons.”

It may have been over ten years ago now and he may have been just a comedian, but this applies to us as much as it does America and it rings true.

*EDIT* For the record I have been and participated in protests in the past, so I do have prior knowledge of protests and am not in any way shape or form an armchair moaner, which is the sad story of many people today.

In some ways I can understand the comments police officers are making on that forum, and you can understand that their tempers must have flared at points...Coop's correct in that proper procedure should have been carried out but sometimes qualitative factors among individuals can't be controlled, even among the police force. Additionally it would be a very hard task in a 'riot' to identify people caught in the middle of it from people are part of it, the police may possibly have to make a quick decision or generalization that all people in the area are to be treated as such. Consequently, the situation was handled very poorly.

Bill Hicks was so much more than a comedian, he held a mirror to society's ugly face

And so was Hunter S. Thompson, providing a damning view of the American & hence the Capitalist Dream; the real American/Capitalist Dream is just simply the pursuit of one's own personal gratification and greed, no matter who you step on or exploit along the way.

But these days there are no such voices out there, I suppose that comes from us all having the not me mentality, let it be someone else's cross to bear, something our government loves to instill within us.
Imagine if our grandparents & great grandparents did that in the wars?

Loving the police statement about the "terror" raids....something along the line of "we don't have any information about specific targets, or specific times, but it was definitely something big. REALLY big. And to do with Al Qaeda."

Honest.

Say goodbye to greed, materialistic needs, jealousy/envy and most important of all, fear.

Everything will soon seem better. Just my view of improvement of course.

I still find it hilarious that people complaining about 'rioters' which by the way if youve studied footage youll see there were none. They were very much reactionary protestors getting angry that they legal/lawful rights were taken away that day.

The government and the police and not in bed as much as we think. They are still very much seperate arms of authority, and at the highest levels there are mixtures of pals and enemies just like any large corporation. Their agendas are not identical.

Her protest is irrelevant. His actions were unnecessary.

Was she even a protester? Was she a press person?

Hooray for cheap cameras and recorders!
