The Academy Award nominations were announced, here are some of the most important nominations if anyone cares.

Best Picture

The Ides of March

War Horse

J. Edgar

The Help

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Moneyball

Tree of Life

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Best Actress

Elisabeth Olsen, Martha Marcy May Marlene

Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady

Viola Davis, The Help

Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Michelle Williams, My Week with Marilyn

Best Actor

Brad Pitt, Moneyball

Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar

Ryan Gosling, The Ides of March

Michael Fassbender, Shame

George Clooney, The Descendants

My goal is to watch as much as possible nominated films before the ceremony as i do every year, although 2011 was the worst year in film industry in a very long time.

2012 is gonna be a good year though, many good titles are coming up in this year.

IS Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close even out? The trailer looks atrousious. Book's quality tho. Also Michael Fessbender is amazing in Hunger. Can't wait to watch Shame.
says nominations wont be announced before the 24th?

Yeah, i was wrong they are not officially announced yet but there are some sites that are claiming that this is the actual list of nominations, even if it's not it won't be too different.
Shame is one of the films that i'm eagerly waiting to see too.

uhm......you might wanna fact check this one.....I thought this was a bit fishy when I saw the Artist wasn't mentioned.

I want Brad to take it home for Tree of Life, mainly so he can finally have one, and yeah, cause he's brilliant and beeyootifoool. But Gary Oldman just deserves it more, and I'm sure Pitt would agree. I'd like to see Fassbinder and Gosling get some acknowledgment though, they've both had spectacular years, especially Fassbinder, who's gone from that guy in Inglorious to one of the best actors of his generation overnight. Would like to see Craig get nominated too, but the Academy loves Clooney, and as good as he was in Dragon Tattoo, it's just another role that he plays if you get what I mean.

Best Picture: The Artist, and maybe Tree Of Life, but I feel like it's kind of slipped from everyone's mind. War Horse has got a chance, which I haven't seen, but seems a bit corny to win. Then again, it's got Benedict Cumberbatch, so I'm probably going to get around to it. BTW, everyone needs to see the first episode of Sherlock season two, it's is absolutely amazing.

Best Actress: Rooney Mara, but that's a fanboy pick, it's probably going to Streep. Or Williams, if there's any justice in the world

I just saw The Tree of Life. It was good but there is no much of a story. Big part of it is only thoughts along with some beautiful nature images and music. It doesn't follow a structured storyline but this unstructured narrative was like a journey for me. It will probably take multiple re-watches to get completely into it. A finely made and relaxing art film. The kids actors were great, they made the film actually.

If Drive does not even get a nomination for best picture then the Academy can get to fuck.

Just watched Stranger Than Fiction. Really liked it, although it's not a movie I'd usually see. I found Will Ferrell to be quite good.

Seen a few recently...

30 Minutes or Less 6/10 - Pretty standard comedy. A few laughs here and there, only really watched it because of Aziz Ansari though. I'd recommend it if you're not up for anything 'heavy'. Not a bad film, it killed 90 minutes without boring me, if nothing else.

50 / 50 7/10 - A lot more laughs than I thought there would be, got the impression it was more drama than comedy but Seth Rogen helps in that department, although he is pretty much the same character he is in all his films, funny, but it's getting a bit old now. All in all, very watchable.

Moneyball 8/10 - Really good sports movie, Brad *swoons* is excellent, Jonah Hill is actually quite good in it as well. Even though I knew the eventual outcome, I enjoyed it all the way through. Don't need to be a fan of baseball to get into it as well, which is nice.

Margin Call 7/10 - Would have been an 8 but I really had no idea what they were talking about most of the time. I was checking Wikipedia all the way through to get my head around 'historical volatility levels', 'mortgage backed securities', 'leverage' and 'market capitalisation' just to get the gist of the film and I was still puzzled half way through. Great cast and well acted though. Would be an excellent watch for someone working in/ studying finance, or just someone who understands the finance game better than me.

yeah thats a crackin documentary, does a good job of explaining the subject in an accessible manner. slightly depressing tho how no lessons seem to have been learnt and the financial sector is just allowed to continue where it left off. it was entertaining to see some of the proponents and actors of the modern banking system squirm under uncomfortable questioning. its criminal that despite what happened, glass-steagall hasnt been re-enacted, surely that should have been the first point of order.

another documentary ive heard plenty of people bang on about is Senna, about some legendary F1 racer. havnt seen it myself n know nothing about racing, but by all accounts a captivating watch whether ur into racing or not. id reccomend 'double agent: the eddie chapman story' which i watched recently. more of a tv documentary than a cinematic one, but its an intriguing wartime story about a thief turned nazi spy turned double agent. i think its up on youtube

senna is fantastic - i've no interest in f1 but i was utterly engrossed and thoroughly enjoyed it.

this weekend i watched...

shame - excellently shot and put together but obviously quite horrible. some terrific set pieces.

to wong foo - first time in years. hilarious stuff. my favourite line is definitely "The last black person to stay here was Sam Cooke"

the machinist - very good, haunting stuff etc but i didn't *like* it. i guess it's not one for people to like really, but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone and wouldn't watch it again. can't say i understood the whole weight-loss business either.

the artist - massively disappointed. to the extent that i can't say i see any reason for it to have been made. the central character was also massively arrogant and self-obsessed. meh. as this type of film goes, well, i wish i'd stayed home and watched singing in the rain instead.

You want a good documentary?

Watch "Beats, Rhymes & Life" the doc on A Tribe Called Quest. Anyone who is even the slightest fan of hip-hop or even jazz should see it.

Watched Black Hawk Down last night, first time in a while. Stunningly shot film. Although depressing that nearly 20 years after the films events, Somalia is in just as big a mess still.
