Hi there,

I'm writing an essay for music and I need examples of EDM tracks that exhibit the creative use of samples (eg. something like Justice - Genesis, Daft Punk - High Life). Equally, some examples of particularly uncreative sampling would be great as well (where a song has literally just been stolen like early Crystal Castles' tracks or Beyonce slaughtering Pon de Floor).

Gimme yo' best!

Cheers

good sampling: Zappe - Larrys Exotic Blend

'Troobadoor' by Le Knight Club has some very nice sampling. It's basically just made of the same couple of snippets pitched up and down.

Might also be worth talking about some albums that are composed entirely of samples like "Endtroducing" or The Avalanches album.

I guess it's not everybodies cup of tea in this forum, but I like the huge number of samples used in this song.

The same guy made an excellent recreation of "Smack My Bitch Up" as well. I'd link to it but there's a one-video limit and I'd like to mention something else.
I know it's Babar the Elephant but Jesus is this ever awesome.
And you might want to hit up the guys on the Whosampled forum, they're brilliant with stuff like this.

Claude von stoke didn't sample that from a old record he got a few vocalists into his studio and recorded it.

You remember incorrectly unless I'm getting it confused with something else.

Quite a few of these 'creative' examples aren't creative at all. Justice? Proper obvious samples, c'mon! Daft Punk, once again really obvious samples. or am I misreading what you are after? Not trying to troll, as hopefully me answers below will help...

First thing that springs to mind as they is a forum regulars innit... shadow dancer...

Probably the all time greatest use of samples in one album was the Dust Brothers producing The Beastie Boys album Paul's Boutique, so so many samples that aren't as obvious as you'd think.

Check out the Hans Zimmerman soundtrack for Inception (not EDM but...) all tracks are based upon a sample of Edith Piaf.

Mobb Deep, some of the samples are still unknown that's how creative they are. So many great Hip Hop albums, try the Jazz samples from diggable planets album 'Blowout Comb' and also the first 2 De La Soul albums.

Talking of Boney M and Duck Sauce being obvious, check out the Boney M track 'Ma Baker' and then listen to 'Poker Face' by Lady GaGa, Boney M themselves used to sample (its not a new thing) check out 'Do you wanna bump' recognise the SKA classic 'Al Capone' by Prince Buster? Listen to their track 'Sunny' and you'll pick up a better use of samples by Justice too ;)

Check out the Fatback Band for an interesting Oizo sample., BN & ER Waves sampling Sparks. Tiga sampling a sample that sampled a sample in You gonna want me, the list is endless.

There's so many to think about and I feel like I'm lecturing you so I'm going to shut up.

It is a Feist cover...

And is Genesis really creative sampling? It's definitely well done but not exactly 'creative'...

EDIT: Mat nails it before me. ;)

But I disagree. Creative sampling shouldn't be how well known or not well known it is.
That's my favourite recent example anyway...

Think what I meant was not how well known the track is but how well the track is used, how obvious is the sample in terms of is it just a big chunk of a song, or is it snippets that have been creatively looped and chopped and turned into something else.

Think I was thinking of another James Blake track? lol

Bit of a weird one but that recent crookers Springer track is a good use of the sample from the Gabba Classic 'Poing'In the way it pitches the sample up and down to create a spring like effect...

Really obvious what this is and whilst chopped a bit it doesn't exactly reinvent the original record.

However, I still think it's really well sampled... Might be in the mixing though, the drums sit over the top of the song in a really good way.

EDIT: Bust Em Up's also really well sampled. Those dudududududududus sound so good mixed over anything.

This whole record is chock full of creative sampling.. and most of it is comprised from snippets of Montreal fm radio.

I would also highly recommend checking out VHS Head from Skam Records - like his alias, he samples a lot of weird television and film snippets and mashes it together into very interesting rhythms and textural sounds:

Some terrible music in this thread...

Anyways, who knows who sampled this rare 70s rare groove slice of gold?

Doesnt this sample like 3 or 4 different hip hop tracks? I know its just chopping vocals which is hardly creative, but its still pretty impressive

I remember reading a rumour that Tyler the Creator's Yonkers samples the Psycho stab, though obviously filtered, messed with and looped. whether or not that's true, I don't know, but if so, it's a pretty fitting touch.

also even though it's probably not what you're looking for, I love the way Wolfgang Gartner sampled Beethoven in this track:

yeah it's obvious but it's still bloody awesome
