Anyone ever tried playing stuff that's not 4/4 to a crowd?
I.e. this, as much as I like this I think it would be confusing to some (including me) http://www.beatport.com/track/talus-lucy-remix/2436685 Check my stupid weekly mixes http://soundcloud.com/larvi For all my twit-maniacs! http://twitter.com/#!/twittaisboring |

To be honest, it sounds like a 4/4.

It's a cool thing to do if you are skilled enough, imo.

So is dubstep 4/4 or cut time?
Larvi I'm pretty sure that track is 4/4 just an irregular beat? |

If you could mix that...well done to you
Actually the 3/4(?) time signature makes me feel really quite uncomfortable! KADKAD: ladies went scissors ;) |

edit: after listening to that track it is in 4/4 time but there is some syncopated kick drums, which makes it sound off |

Listening for when the melody repeats has always been the easiest way for me to determine time signature
I still stuck at it for the weirder ones |

Like a Busta Rhymes "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" type dance. As for dubstep, it is a half-time feel of drum n bass. DnB runs at 160-180 bpm while dubstep is around 80-90. I've never used anything but 4/4 although some producers will place some elements in a 4/4 track that are not 4/4 (i.e. Paul Kalkbrenner's "Platscher"). |

A lot of times when people say something isn't 4/4, they simply mean it's not four to the floor.
Dubstep for example is 4/4 but not four to the floor. |

No, surely that'd be between 70 and 140 would it not? I've heard people say dubstep's half time drum and bass quite a bit and it makes zero sense. |

Everything in it's Right Place (Gigamesh remix) is like, 6/4 or something weird.
Messes me up something fierce mixing, but you can dance to it just fine. |

i think everything in its right place is actually 10/4, or else two 4/4 bars and one 2/4 - ie it's a 10-beat phrase

The rhythm of dubstep isn't simply "half time drum n bass". The "half time" description that is used to describe dubstep means something quite specific: it refers to how the track has two parallel tempos, run by different elements of the track. Usually the swing is created with the bass and is run at half the speed of the percussion which creates the groove. In addition there's usually some syncopated elements for that reggae swagger. The basic time signature is a classic 4/4 - it's very easy to count if you just follow the snares (who are half timed compared to the hihats etc).

The track the OP posted is 4/4, just had off-beat accents in the kick, and the white noise is a 3 over 4 polyrythm.
It's easy to dance to tracks in 5 or 7 etc once you know the time signature. I went to a Venetian Snares gig and about 1/4 of the crowd were dancing in time, the rest were just jumping randomly. This is in 7, once you hear the groove in 7 it's pretty easy to dance to. "I focused on the dubstep and forgot the garage and funky. I swore UK garage sounds different....but I listen to a lot of hardcore." |

Snares is easy to figure out especially since 90% of his stuff is in 7/4

Also listening to the full lucy remix makes it clear this is in fact a 4/4, kinda like this one:
