I've been listening to this music for a long time and always been tempted to learn how to dj

so
a lot of you out there are djs, can someone recommend me on some relatively cheap (probably second hand) cdjs and tell me how easy is it to learn to beatmatch and do all cdjs use more-or-less the same interface?
etc

download a demo of Traktor and get used to that. it's cheaper than spending money on CDJs if it turns out DJing isn't your bag.

Yeah all CDJ's pretty much look the same and will work in the same way - you don't have to learn different interfaces or anything.

I've no idea what makes good or bad CDJ's to be honest, I mean they all have play/cue buttons, loop functions, a jog wheel and pitch control and maybe some effects and things so I don't really understand why pioneer for example are so expensive. Maybe it's cos I've only ever really used my old crappy ones but if someone could explain to me in a sentence or two that would be great...

Learning to beatmatch on CDJ's will not take you long at all, especially if you have someone/something to give you a few pointers. You'll probably grasp the basics after a week or so, and after that will gradually and continuously improve in speed and accuracy. If you did buy CDJ's I would definitely recommend ignoring the BPM counters, because they aren't always accurate and you end up spending just as much time trying to match the numbers by eye as you would matching the beats by ear.

Not totally sure about models and brands but in the relatively cheap price range (and not crap) you might have luck with Numark, Gemini, Denon and probably a lot more which I can't think of.

This is the longest post I've written in a while.

the main difference ive noticed is the feel of the jogwheel, but i havnt djed outside of bedrooms/living rooms so dont really have any extensive knowledge. one of my mates just got the traktor s4 controller as starting equipment without any previous experience and hes at a pretty decent level less than a week later, tho ul have to cough up 900 pounds (or euros, cant remember). i started off with some crappy 250 euro cdjs, took considerably longer but they did the trick and i still use them, mainly because i cant afford an upgrade, just as well that my mate gt traktor.

anyway, for some cheap deals have a look here,

LOVE the music you play and don't dj for the sake of djing. The rest will all come naturally!

is traktor effectively the same as ableton?
I used ableton but i didnt feel like i was actually doing anything as i dont have a midi controller and everything is automatically beatmatched

No, Ableton is live performance/production software, Traktor is a DJ program. Traktor will beat-sync everything of you want it to, but you get more of a feel for traditional DJ-img by turning that off.

if your not sure if its your bag you could get a cheap controller to give it a go, or go to a dj school and try out a few diff set ups...

sometimes having a go on a rubbish set up to start with could put you off, or it could spur you on further and be a blessing once you get some good kit...

i quite like the vestax vci - 300 and serato itch

good luck!
