Hmm i was reading abletonlivedj forum the other day and someone had written a post about switch:
"Hello peep's Well im pissed off. I went out this weekend to a club in Oxford and there was supposedly a top name dj playing. Me and another 150-200 people paid |

i know i think differently to most people, but when i go watch djs, i dont really go for their djing ability. so many people are good djs and most people can do it with the technology that is around now.
i go out to see producers, who play their own productions and similar tracks, if they are top notch djs its an added bonus, but i think switch deserves all the recognition he gets for his production skills |

couldn't really give a shit how its played. if someone is technically brilliant, but the records are shite, i'm not going to dance away and think "this music is awful, but he's using vinyl, so my respect for him has skyrocketed".
i also find it odd when people stand and stare at what the dj is doing. |

Anyway, rant over, this threads been seriously hijacked - sorry! |

in defence of Switch's ableton sets, he does not prepare his sets and render it down to 1 track of audio as that chap has implied. The 'opening of a window' throughout his set is actually him browsing for the next track (as a asd file or something), which he drops into ableton, ready to mix. i've seen it first hand and even though it doesnt seem like the standard way to use ableton, but it is what works for him and i dont reckon it should ever be an issue.

I've nothing against using laptops at all... |

I saw Switch in Birmingham last month and he was by the best act of the night, whipped the crowd into an absolute frezy at 4am, in the top 5 best DJ sets I've ever seen.

in response to matt, i have used ableton a little, mainly for BTWS dj sets - but to be honest, i found it a bit of a pain to be looking at screen instead of a danceflloor - i wouldnt discount using it again though...

As one of the few people on here who doesn't DJ, I can honestly say I don't give two hoots what medium the music is mixed by, I just enjoy good and well selected tunes.
People may prefer vinyl or CDJ's to Ableton, just as I prefer to watch someone break dance rather than just simply jump about. However just because break dancing is cooler, more skillful and better to watch, doesn't make it better for a packed and sweaty dance floor. |

For what it's worth, I'd much rather see an excellent DJ (there's a very small handful on the planet) playing other people's records in an ingenious way, than watching a production outfit 'go live' and reinterpret their back catalogue with a few beat repeats on Ableton...
I also really hope Switch doesn't pre-prepare his sets- I like to see a DJ respond to the audience! facebook.com/casper.c.dj twitter.com/casper_c soundcloud.com/casper_c fielddayfestivals.com |

blimey a right hornet's nest here!
well i have to say last night cheered me up no end (i was in a bad mood due to friday's 'turning up two weeks early for the sebastian gig' - idiot) but what it did throw up was the often bedated thing of ability over tune selektion....even without Switch and his ableton... i thought the shitdisco lads played some awesome stuff, admittidly it wasn't always mixed particularily well, but they kept me dancin' for nearly all of their set and most of it was tuneage that i'd normally have to go out of leeds for. it's just a shame that some people were heckiling them and there wasn't much of a crowd, but that seems par for the course at the minute. // |
