Quote:While outside a rain-sodden Kings Cross strip goes about its usual seedy business, in the DJ booth on the Empire Hotel’s first floor Sydney DJ Smokin Joe Mekhael is still breaking through the pain barrier as he aims to be the first person to DJ for seven days straight.

Your Daily SPA joined Mekhael in the booth on Monday morning just after he cracked the 62 hour mark, finding him croaky in voice but healthy in spirit – thanks in part to re-reading the Guinness World Records rulebook and discovering a loophole that allowed him some much needed R&R.

“At about 55 hours I was reviewing the rules,” Mekhael explained, “and I found out that for every hour I played I can rest for five minutes, and that had accumulated into more than four hours. So I rested for a bit, and now I’m back and feel like a million bucks man, so I’m gonna do it.”

Though Mekhael has stuck true to his pledge to tackle the record attempt chemically unassisted, his marathon effort hasn’t come without its share of unwanted psychedelic moments.

“To be honest I was absolutely destroyed last night – at about 50 hours I started to hallucinate, and then it got really, really intense,” Mekhael said. “I started to get some brighter colours, distortions in my visions – that progressed to people’s faces warping on the dancefloor, I had a lot of problems with my depth perception.

“I went outside for a walk with my friend and got some fresh air for a bit, but honestly, if I didn’t get a little bit of rest I would be in an absolute state by now.”

Mekhael said the Saturday night crowd was the best he’s ever seen at the Empire (“I saw a video someone posted afterwards and it looked like a different venue”), and while only his sister Mary and a regular stream of well-wishers were on hand to witness the string of progressive house remixes he laid down this morning, he’s anticipating the venue to once again be at capacity as he approaches Brazilian DJ King’s existing mark of five days and 19 minutes this Wednesday 21 December.

“A friend from DJ Warehouse has been monitoring the traffic that the live feed has been getting and he put it best – that Empire have got to put some sort of ceiling supports on the bottom level, because there’s going to be that many people here on Wednesday to see me make history.”

Mekhael is wearing a trademark I Love Smokin Joe Mekhael singlet and still offering his theme cry – “WOOOOOOO!” – as he approaches 70 hours this evening.

nothing short of amazing, you can see it here!

While this is impressive in some ways, personally I feel like these sorts of things utterly miss the point of what DJing is about.

if you know him its more of a "dont ever quit" attitude, like his shot at endurance and making dreams reality. hes not out to be the next van buuren or anything... he plays lmfao for gods sake.

Well he's not gonna be pulling off a Radio 1 Essential mix if he has to play seven days worth of material, now is he?

I think you could say that about many "worlds longest [insert random thing here]" like longest kiss or longest dance or whatever.

I tuned in for a bit and the timer was at 87 hours and he was still looking pretty awake and happy, talkin to some dude in the crowd! pretty cool challenge to set yourself, hope he does it.

Granted this is missing the point of DJing from a purist POV, but it's still a pretty epic acheivement. Props to him. I wouldn't be surprised if the nutbag drops dead tomorrow when he hits the world record.

Just tuned in briefly and he was grinning his tits off with his hands in the air - must be quite a week for him.

Chris Liebing also played 13 hours last saturday at Berghain. Well it was his birthday so the other djs probably didn't mind.

as a guy that stayed awake for 5 days solid, the hallucination's don't kick until day 4 at the earliest

132 hours of shit vocal house? mmmmmm no thanks....

just because he has an impressive ability to stay awake doesn't change the fact he's a shit dj

he did it for the endurance mate, it was a personal goal he set for himself and he did it. dont see why people have to be so negative about other peoples accomplishments.
