ok the thread title is a bit dramatic. it seems nova somehow was made available for download from four tet's soundcloud for some time, without his consent. spotted it on saturday night. he just sent another tweet wondering if they're still looking into it.

"@SoundCloud @SCsupport one of my tracks became downloadable today without me doing anything. What is going on?!?!? Not happy."

"@FourTet Hey Kieren, many apologies for this. Can you let me know which upload it was, and I'll ask our developers to look for a cause."

Thats pretty terrible of Soundcloud; considering its a paid-for service, I am not that impressed with them sometimes, in terms of it just going down etc. But this is staggering, God knows how that happened.

I personally have stopped uploading full tracks though, as there are browser plug-ins to rip the tracks from Soundcloud - apparently it actually takes whatever format you uploaded as, so if its a 128 it takes that, if its an AIFF it has that - not used it myself, so no idea if thats legit or what, but worried me enough to stop me putting full tracks up when they are for sale.

just happened to be listening to this on soundcloud earlier today and noticed someone saying in the comments he'd downloaded it off there. well weird. pretty awful of soundcloud.

Crazy. Must be very frustrating for an artist for that to happen.

Even crazier is that I paid a tenner for this on vinyl, now some fortunate scrotes have got it for free.

That sucks, now high quality mp3's will be all over and not even poor vinyl rips at that (assuming he uploaded a half decent quality version).

any data can be ripped if it is streamable

Yeah but Soundcloud streams a 128 converted file, while if it's downloadable that's the original file you get.

^ I would imagine he could have been a bit more subtle if he'd wanted to but as for the letting everyone know about being able to download it, he only tweeted about it after he'd disabled downloads.

Besides, I would have been well and truly fucked off.
