For no reason whatsoever I'll post a smoke machine anecdote.

Legends in Manchester used to have these proper hi-nrg gay alnighters where the resident used to do something like a 7 hour set. The guy on one Friday had apparently not packed any 'pisstracks', and when caught short was forced under the decks to empty his bladder into a plastic container that was down there, which he did several times. It was already half-full of something, so he presumed he wasn't the first person to do this.

Fast forward 24 hours, and my mate's night is getting up to full steam and, below the decks, he spies a smoke machine. Excellent. Filling it up from the container nearby, he gives it an almighty hammering for a few minutes to fill the venue with smoke, which takes a lot longer than usual..

Long story short, someone twigged that the air was full of vaporised piss and the venue had to be evacuated for 20 mins while it settled..

Haha, excellent. Legends is one odd club at the best of times.

The owner once asked us if we were interested in doing a 'foam party' in there.

we politely declined.

Waters of Nazareth or some Happy Hardcore. Works every time especially if your warming up for someone.

I remember coming on after a hip hop DJ once and playing the full 20 minute live version of Rare Earth's 'Get Ready'.

Still to this date, i've never seen a place go so irrationally apeshit.

It was either genius, or someone had started giving away free shots of absinthe....

if we are playing a proper set, weve been starting it with the night facilities mix of lo sforzo into the la riots remix for the drop

I like to start my sets either on fire or something like the end of the film of 'The Wild Bunch', and slowly go downhill from there.

how can anyone possibly beat snow - informer as the intro...

personally, missy elliot ft tweet - thugman, looped into the buy now - for sale breakdown with missy screaming "THIS ONE RIGHT HERE IS FOR MY THUGS, THIS ONE RIGHT HERE IS FOR MY THUGS"

then id throw some gang signs at the crowd, take off my pants and then start dancing...

Last week Surkin ended his set with alot of distortion & effects before ending it very abruptly so we brought up walkman re-edit and everyone went nuts :)
I was reading this thinking, wow what a coincidence that happened in Adelaide, then i realised you are from adelaide! haha u guys gonna be playing at electric more often? good fun that night

Last time i played we looped the ending of 'Intra' that Mr.Oizo did for EdRec vol.2 then once the girl says 'OK now begin' we put on waters of nazareth(erol mix)

another time we started with Genesis then when the beat changes we played stunt-oizo

this didnt go down to well with the commercial house loving crowd lol

i once started a set with "like a prayer" by madonna. it was a great night btw.

i normally just check the crowd. some months ago i used to start my sets with sebastiAn bloc party remix - i love that piano intro, and vocals coming in.

justice remix for klaxons did very good for me several times, especially when i played first or second. i once started a set with zoolookology by jean michelle jarre. i put that song for myself, i really liked it in busy p's mix.

normally a play at parties with djs playing different music - from so-called electroclash to reggae and funk sometimes. it's a usual thing in many russian clubs at the moment. so i first put a song that would draw people's attention and kinda introduce them to the music i like.

Depends on the time your on too.
Remember, anyone can rinse the blogs for the biggest tunes and play party bangers for an hour and a half, but thats not really building a set.
I'm playing a lot of disco re-edits and older detroit tracks to start with, chuck in a few interesting, unexpected choices too, the crowd will remember you better then.

yeah you have to be careful what tracks you play in our town, though everyone seemed to be loving surkin and he played LFO Freak! we were thinking about starting with para ones sages-femmes but that might have been a bit too much hehe
