Im interested in hearing how other people like to start their sets.

If you arent required to mix your first track in with the last one of the dj before you i mean.

What songs do you use and what tricks and effects do you like to use to make that opening sound interesting

I like gifts!!!

In the case of starting the night ive used DFA's remix of Decepticon a bit, gets peoples feet tapping.

Last week Surkin ended his set with alot of distortion & effects before ending it very abruptly so we brought up walkman re-edit and everyone went nuts :)

I turn the reverb right up and loop the first few bars of 'Shadows' by Midnight Juggernaults then slowly turn the volume up and the reverb down and then let it drop.

Great song.

Well I got Bolt Action Five to record me some vocals which I then mix into a bootleg I did of 'Get Ready For This' by 2Unlimited, oh wait a sec thats not me is it...

I lik eto start off with 'Human League' - Things that Dreams are mad of. The League Unlimited Orchestra version and then bring in a tune over the top from about half way through the HL one and have them both on at the same time, make sure the 2nd tune is pretty different from the first as it creates a kind of polarity.

I used to start off with the SO ME Klaxons remix quite abit as its a good set starter and also mixes into loads of other tunes and loops really well.

Eye of the Tiger at volume 11.

Shadow box for the entire track.
Let it fade out then play Snow - Informer.

Amazing Scenes.

I get the dj before me to put on March of the Mods and then march from the back of the room to the dj booth saluting the whole time.

loop the guitar on "romantic rights" intro, then add some reverb, more reverb, more reverb and then drop something massive (justice, daft punk, boysnoize, etc) when I play around 3-4. If I play earlier...I play any random song I've been listening to lately.

If I am playing all night long I like to do a warm up set for myself, then...around 3am, start the big set! hehe

Either the 2001: A space odyssey main theme, The Terminator 2 theme tune, the Countdown jingle when the clocks ticking down or the Eastenders drum solo from the end of the programme.

Klaxons - Atlantis to interzone (Yuksek & Brodinski mix) I like that one, and Modeselektor - Kill Bill vol. 4 (Including the first minute) or Hot Chip - Shake a fist at 01:53 (Before we go any further...)
