I'm not sure why but i was always under the impression Sparks were a bit shit......i'd only really heard a couple of track but they always struck me as a bit cheesy, probably cos i remember seeing them on Richard and Judy as a kid. Anyways, grabbed a 'best of' the other day and, fuck me, how wrong i was.

Particularly loving 'tryouts for the human race', 'number one song in heaven' and 'beat the clock'.............can anybody recommend what proper albums of their's to pick up first?

all the stuff they did with giorgio moroder rules...'no. 1 in heaven' in particular. 'kimono my house' has some cool tunes on it, the kind of kooky operatic power-pop stuff they're known for

I recommend:

Profile: The Ultimate Sparks Collection 2CD (every track a winner)

Balls (recentish and stunning modern electro pop)

Gratuitous Sex & Senseless Violins (recentish and fab)

Plagiarism (Them doing updated versions of their old tracks with some guest artists. (Jimmy Somerville, the guy from Faith No More)

Hello Young Lovers (very recent, and takes some of the orchestral elements they used on Lil' Beethoven and makes decent pop tracks with them. I wasn't keen on Lil' Beethoven itself, other than the track Suburban Homeboy, which is hilarious)

12" Mixes (yes, all the extended versions of their singles on one album)

There are many of their early albums that are good, but Profile cherry picks the best 2 or 3 tracks from them all.

The only album I haven't got that I intend to buy is Pulling Rabbits Out Of A Hat. As the redone version of the track with the same name on Plagiarism is stunning.

Yeah the 'Best Of...' isn't really a Best Of at all. The Ultimate Collection is the proper 'best of'. But it doesn't span their whole output.
